Stornoway, originally called Bruceville, which we see the steeple atop a hill, is well off the intersection of roads 161 and 108 a natural crossroads now recognized as Village-Relais.  The village has just under 600 inhabitants. It is located at the crossroads of two major provincial highways (Highway 108 and Highway 161).

Stornoway was founded in 1858 by the arrival of the Scots came settle there to escape famine and poverty. Around 1860, the first French Canadian family, Legendre, is established. They successively built a carding mill (for spinning wool), a fulling mill (for cloth), a flour mill, a saw mill and a factory of doors and windows. Around 1885 the Scots, for lack of work, leave the area and in 1912 the French Canadians permanently install it

in 1852, a rich merchant Colin Noble and potash maker, settled there. It was the most prominent figure in the whole region. He was also justice of the peace, school commissioner and postmaster. He renamed the village Stornoway, in honor of a Scottish city, capital of the Lewis Island.

The Catholic Church (1920) houses a superb statue of St. Alphonsus, the renowned sculptor Louis Jobin.

The municipality of Stornoway was founded at the crossroads Lambton, St. Francis and Mégantic, in the 1840s In 1849, the first general store opened its doors here.

Tourist attractions

The village retains many heritage monuments such as the four cemeteries that serve as the final resting Scottish settlers in the Eastern Townships. A monument, installed opposite the church, recalls the story of the founding families.

John O'Neil

John O'Neil was born in 1936 in Sherbrooke. He began his journalism career in La Voix de l'Est in Granby and Saguenay Progress in Chicoutimi. He resides later in Quebec City, where he worked at Sun as a journalist and crime reporter; L'Event-Journal as a reporter and deputy news editor; then in Montreal La Presse,where he was literary and dramatic criticism.

John O'Neil was also Information Agent for cultural affairs departments of Intergovernmental Affairs, Education, Health and Social Services and the General Society of the film and the language of Office French.

John O'Neil now lives in Paris and devoted himself to writing. John O'Neil was knighted in the National Order of Quebec in 1998, and a member of the Order of Canada in 2009.

Go to a theme ride on Summit Drive that passes Stornoway!

The route is called Summit Drive and substantially traverses the MRC Granite. With a length of 157 km, the Summit Drive crosses 15 municipalities offering, in turn, different services and experiences to visitors.

Throughout his career, the Summit Drive showcases the beautiful landscape that we offer the highest southeastern mountains of Quebec and brings us to the edge of the majestic lakes of our beautiful region. This new blue sign showing the mountains, water and the stars. A road map of Summit Drive is available for your excursions outdoors for your lungs inflate health of fresh, clean air of the Eastern Townships where the pollution can not reach.

Estrie that's life, lungs, unpolluted air of the cities to devour

To provide a welcoming image to visitors and generate interest, the municipality of Stornoway, partner of Summit Drive, the new relay village on Route 161 North, near the industrial park in August 2008, an information sign indicating the activities and services offered on its territory. We also find the map of Summit Drive,the map of the municipality and a table providing information on the population, the date of incorporation, the floral emblem and motto of the municipality as well as the discovery of a beautiful landscape that people will want to share with visitors.

There are currently 12 tourism routes in Québec which, in the Eastern Townships, the Wine Road and the new Townships Trail opened last year. The Summit Drive, last-possible route of the Eastern Townships according to the Ministry of Tourism Policy, is proud to join this tourist offer and intends, over time, be at the height of his discoveries!

Mill Legendre

Legendre mill was built in 1883 in the town of Stornoway, near Lake Megantic in the township of Winslow, on Legendre River. The mill was built by Télesphore Legendre to replace a dilapidated mill.

This flour mill has a structure of beams and lintels that intersect in perfect harmony. To prevent the formation of ice during the winter months, the builder of the mill had placed the paddle wheel inside.

Through a tangle of old relics, we guess the big wheel and gear system driving.Pulleys and attached leather straps sinew still testify to the active life of the mill until 1940.

It is true that over time, miller's left one by one, leaving the old mill memories of past, but today the town of Stornoway retains that heritage that has withstood the vagaries of time.

Provide safe equestrian activities full of fun!

The Winslow Ranch offers guided trail rides, on time, the trails of southern sector of Frontenac Park. Horseback activities are offered for all. On site, there are thirty purebred horses, 2 stables, 2 outdoor arenas, 4 chalets to accommodate foreign students, 3 landscaped lakes, an orchard, domestic animals, large parking and rest areas .

Since 2000, the equestrian center receives hiking groups up to 15 people from May to October, and on reservation. Over the years, the ranch has made himself a good reputation and receives more than 1,000 visitors each year.That's a pretty impressive number for a ranch located in a small village like Stornoway!

Besides the summer riding camp,where a total of 80 children aged 6 to 16 years old come to stay from Sunday evening to Friday afternoon. We remain proud of our passion for horses with tourists.
