Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte


A man involved in his community and even to International. A man near all. He paid special attention to the poor and the sick among others by pressing the home of Montreal's father.


Mgr. Turcotte was born in Montreal Friday, June 26, 1936 in St. Margaret Mary Parish

He did his classical studies at the Collège André-Grasset 1947-1955

He was ordained May 24, 1959 in the St. Vincent de Paul parish by my Lord Laurent Morin, then auxiliary bishop in Montreal.


He was first appointed curate at St. Mathias Parish -Apôtre (1959-1961) and assistant diocesan chaplain of the Catholic Workers Youth (1961-1964).
He completed his training by obtaining a diploma in social ministry in Lille, France


A man committed


Returning home, he was appointed diocesan chaplain of the Catholic Women and the Independent Youth Movement of Christian Workers (1965-1967)clergy.


From 1967 to 1974 he was responsible for various functions within the Office of the  responsible for seminarians of the Diocese of Montreal , Secretary of treatments Commission responsible for education and continuing education of the clergy. In 1974 he became director of the Office of Parish Pastoral.


In 1977, he was appointed prosecutor of the diocese. On 25 September 1981, Archbishop Paul Grégoire appointed vicar general of the diocese and general coordinator of pastoral care.

May 14, 1982, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Montreal. He was consecrated bishop on 29 June by Cardinal Paul Grégoire.


He organized the visit of Pope John Paul II in



1984,he was appointed archbishop of Montreal March 17, 1990 following the resignation of Cardinal Paul Grégoire.

October 30, 1994, His Holiness Pope John Paul II announced his appointment as Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church. In Rome, 26 November he entered the College of Cardinals.


In 1997 he became president of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, he assumes office until 2000


He participated in the World Youth Day, World Youth Day , 1997, 2000, 2002, and 2005


Mgr. Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte participated in the conclave that led to the election of Pope Benedict XVI in April 2005.


Having reached the age of 75, he officially retired in June 2011. Having been developed replaced he continues to perform its task of Cardinal. Mgr. Turcotte has set the bar high for his replacement. It might even be a few years before it is appointed

Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte was born in Montreal on June 26, 1936. April 15, 1982 Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of Suas and auxiliary of the Archbishop of Montreal. He received episcopal ordination of Bishop Paul Gregory of hands 29 June 1982. During the visit of the Holy Father in 1984 he was a delegate of the Quebec bishops with the provincial government and is also responsible for coordinating the visit in the diocese of Montreal. March 17, 1990, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Montreal.


In August 1993, he went to Denver (Colorado) to attend the Eighth World Youth Day which was invited to provide catechesis French-speaking youth. In October 1994 he went to Rome to participate in the Synod of Bishops on the consecrated life.


On October 30, 1994, His Holiness Pope John Paul II announced his appointment as Cardinal of the Holy Roman Church. In Rome, 26 November he entered the College of Cardinals. On 12 December 1994 the Holy Father appointed him a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications and a member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints.


On June 6, 1995 McGill University in Montreal gave him an honorary doctorate in theology. In October 1995, he was elected vice president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops. From 1996 to 2006 he was a member of the Prefecture for Economic Affairs of the Holy SeeMontreal.

in August 1997 at the XII World Youth Day in Paris, Cardinal is invited to catechesis young Francophones. A few months later, in October 1997, he was elected President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Canada, a position he held until 1999. That same year, he participated in the Special Assembly for the Synod of America bishops.


At the request of the Holy Father, he acts as President of the Commission for the final message. He actively participates in the course of World Youth Day in Rome (2000), Toronto (2002) and Cologne (2005). Each time, he was invited to deliver two catechesis young Francophones.


In June 2007, Concordia University of Montreal awarded him an honorary doctorate in Law to highlight his work as a pastor and his support for religious works, spiritual and philanthropic , In May 2009, he was appointed member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.


Very close community organizations in his diocese, Cardinal sponsors several of them in addition to chairing a blood drive held each year Friday.


Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte love hockey and the Montreal Canadiens. He has a great sense of humor. He knows easily communicate with the public and has an open mind reflecting charisma.


His health in 2015


The health status of Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, hospitalized since March 24, 2015 in a palliative care unit in Montreal North, remains precarious.


This was stated Marie-ClaracHospital,in a statement, adding that the former Archbishop of Montreal was "very fragile", but that his condition was stable.


Although weakened, Cardinal Turcotte thanked the people for his "kindness" and asked to pray for him, that Easter period.


Cardinal Turcotte, 78 years old, was at the head of the diocese of Montreal for over 22 years. He was appointed cardinal in 1994. Bishop Christian Lepine succeeded him in 2012 as archbishop of Montreal.
