The member for Compton, Claude Gosselin,then Minister of Lands and Forests, then offered his mediation to resolve the conflict. It is a failure. Given the length of the negotiations, Domtar threatens to close both plants while the union is demanding that the government step in the company.

During the strike, from July 1968 to January 1969, the cities of Windsor and 'East Angus are almost completely paralyzed, Domtar is the largest employer. Tension making growing, violent episodes become inevitable. In late July, an injunction is issued to prevent unionized block the entrance to the plant mechanics, foremen and security guards.
In mid-August, foremen cars are vandalized. During a demonstration, strikers penetrated inside the factory East-Angus and hold for a few hours while being armed. On 16 September, two guardians of Pinkerton are injured in a violent protest because they entered the factory. Unionized raging then walk over the city and are accompanied by supporters.
That is over 300 people armed with sticks on their way to the police station and city hall. They accuse the municipal police of being in the pay of Domtar and the mayor of East Angus to be a scab. Indeed, it is a factory foreman and did not respect the picket lines . The crowd then falls on the riot squad of the Sûreté du Québec (78 officers) that protect the station and the town hall.


After the negotiations, the brigade left the scene and the crowd quiet avoiding ask regrettable acts . The bridge of East Angus was even blocked by strikers at some point. The government then ordered the holding of an inquiry into the situation in the pulp and paper industry.
On January 21, 1969, workers 70% endorsed the collective agreement. Many workers are still dissatisfied with the final agreement. The promise not to be prosecuted criminally for acts of vandalism was the central element of the agreement. Domtar finally granted an increase of 30 cents an hour. The union was sentenced to $ 19,000 in fines for contempt of court and pay $ 20,000 in compensation to Domtar for damage to its plants.
There are two theaters in the municipality, which hosted popular artists in Quebec . The city has a room for a little over a hundred people while the auditorium of the Polyvalente (school)  Louis-Saint-Laurent can accommodate over 400 people.
Angus has three schools (two primary and secondary level). Polyvalente Louis-Saint-Laurent welcomes just over 800 students, 12 to 18 years old, from all municipalities of the Haut-St-François.
